Ashwin's Future with Chennai Super Kings

New Delhi, August 11: Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reached out to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for clarification regarding his role in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, according to reports from a sports news outlet.

As per the same source, Ashwin has expressed his willingness to part ways with CSK if he does not align with their future plans.

During the mega auction in 2025, Ashwin was acquired by CSK for a substantial sum of Rs 9.75 crore. In IPL 2025, he participated in nine matches, securing seven wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 9.13.

This season marked a challenging period for Ashwin, as he recorded his highest economy rate of 9.12 runs per over, surpassing his previous high of 8.49.

The timeline for player releases is typically determined by the auction schedule, which for IPL 2026 has yet to be announced. While mini auctions occur annually, mega auctions are held every three years.

These mega auctions usually take place between November and February. Ashwin humorously noted in an interview with fellow player Sanju Samson that trades can only happen within a week leading up to the auction.

With 201 wickets in 239 matches, Ashwin ranks as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, boasting an average of 30.94. Before rejoining CSK in 2025, he played for several franchises, including the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.

CSK also faces other significant decisions, including the captaincy, which was taken over by MS Dhoni mid-season following an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

In a related development, Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has indicated his desire to be released ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. He communicated this to the RR management shortly after IPL 2025 concluded.

Despite the Royals conducting their season review meetings in June, they have yet to respond to Samson's request.

Samson was one of six players retained by the Royals before the last mega auction, with a retention fee of Rs 18 crore, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Sandeep Sharma, and Shimron Hetmyer.
